Colombia’s Interior and Justice Minister German Vargas Lleras announced that Colombia will assist Ecuador in the war on drugs.
Vargas Lleras made this announcement after a meeting on Thursday with his Ecuadorean counterpart, Gustavo Jalkh, in which they discussed security issues.
The collaboration is part of efforts to re-establish a positive relationship between the two countries.
After the meeting, Ecuador expressed interest in Colombia’s work to “purify” its national police. “Colombia has an interesting experience under a legislative development which allows to skillfully identify and separate the bad members of a police force,” Jalkh stated.
Ecuadorean President, Rafael Correa, announced he would purge the police force of corrupt members following a rebellion on September 30 over police salaries.
Jalkh said Vargas Lleras had “explained to him some effective experiences Colombia had with reforming institutions.”
