Colombia denies nor confirms cheating hostage negotiations

by Adriaan Alsema October 13, 2008

Colombia’s highest military commander denies nor confirms the story
lawyers told El Nuevo Herald that the guerrillas guarding Ingrid
Betancourt, three U.S. military contractors and eleven Colombian
policemen were negotiating the release
, but were double crossed.

In a communique, general Freddy Padilla de Léon says the information spread by El Nuevo Herald and was taken over by several Colombian media only works in favor of the FARC, Colombia’s largest rebel group.

Padilla says the revealed story helps the FARC deny the serious problem the rebels face. The general repeated it was because of infiltration within the highest structure of the organization that made the rescue possible
