Govt denies FARC bought Russian missiles

The Colombian government on Tuesday denied claims by the Peruvian government that guerrilla organization the FARC are in possession of Russian anti-aircraft missiles.

Defense Minister Gabriel Silva said that the FARC has always attempted to obtain arms, and that there is no evidence that the guerrilla group acquired seven Russian anti-aircraft missiles.

Silva said that intelligence indicated that up to this point the guerrillas have constructed home-made rockets, which they use in attacks on the Colombian army.

Prosecutors in Peru allege that corrupt Peruvian officials sold at least four Russian-made missiles to the FARC between May and October 2008, and another three in 2009.
