Colombia demands respect from Ecuador

The call from respect comes after contradictory statements from Ecuadorean authorities about the rescue of Ecuadorean citizen Kléber Larriva, who was abducted on Ecuadorean territory.

Initially Ecuadorian’s chief of police thanked his Colombian collegues for their help in the rescue, but was contradicted by  Interior Minister Fernando Bustamante, who said he regretted the attitude of Colombia and the lack of help trying to rescue the Ecuadorean.

The Colombian Government responded with a letter saying “the best way to contribute to an improvement of relations between Colombia and Ecuador is to show respect and prudence in public statements.”

Ecuador and Colombia have cut relations after a Colombian cross-border raid on a FARC camp that killed FARC commander Raúl Reyes and two dozen people present in the camp.
