Dozens of journalists have sent a letter to Colombia’s Supreme Court in support of two columnists who the court wants to sue over articles accusing the country’s highest judicial entity of bias.
In the columns, published last week, columnists Cecilia Orozco and Maria Jimena Duzan claimed the Supreme Court made personnel changes to favor lawmakers suspected of criminal activities.
In return, the Supreme Court filed criminal charges, accusing the columnists of slander.
In support of the columnists, more than a 100 journalists — including the country’s most respected ones — signed a letter in which they declare themselves co-authors of the columns.
Colombia’s Foundation for Press Freedom rejected the court’s actions, saying the lawsuit was a “violation of the freedom of opinion.”
