Colombia court denies extradition of serial rapist and murderer

Colombia’s Supreme Court on Wednesday denied the extradition of serial rapist and murderer Luis Alfredo Garavito for the alleged rape and murder of two children committed in Ecuador.

According to the criminal chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, Garavito was already convicted in Colombia for the crimes detailed in Ecuador’s extradition request. The court argued that Garavito cannot be prosecuted for the same offense twice.

Ecuador petitioned for Garavito’s extradition in July 2011. According to the request, Garavito was supposed to be tried in Ecuador after having served his sentence in Colombia.

Garavito, also known as “The Beast”, was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2000 for the rape and murder of 111 children.
