‘Colombia could shut down the FARC within a month’

Colombia could shut down the FARC within a month but won’t, because this could spark an armed conflict with Venezuela and Ecuador, said
Polish Ambassador to Bogotá, Jacek Perlin.

Perlin told newspaper El Nuevo Dia that vice-President Francisco
Santos revealed that Colombia has the military might to bring down the FARC in record time when talking to several European ambassadors last week.

According to the ambassador, Santos said that Colombia is unwilling to do so because the guerrillas have bases in neighboring countries and a Colombian incursion onto Venezuelan or Ecuadorian soil in pursuit of guerrillas “could result in negative consequences.”

Venezuela President Hugo Chávez announced last weekend that his country would respond militarily to any Colombian intervention. A previous incursion into Ecuador to kill FARC commander Raúl Reyes left diplomatic relations strained to this day.
