Colombia congratulates Maduro for disputed Venezuela election victory

Colombia on Monday congratulated Venezuelan President-elect Nicolas Maduro for Sunday’s electoral victory.

The congratulations by Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin came later than usual as Venezuela’s opposition candidate Henrique Capriles — who according to his country’s electoral authorities lost the elections with little more than one percentage point — refused to recognize the results.

However, according to Colombia’s foreign minister, the electoral results must be respected.

Holguin did applaud “the disposition of government representatives and the opposition” to audit the election results in the politically divided country.

“Colombia, as a nation united with Venezuela for unshakeable historic and neighbor ties, trusts that the light shined by the will of the Venezuelan people yesterday will illuminate the dialogue and understanding to continue forking for its development and well being,” the minister concluded.
