Colombia climb 8 places in Fifa soccer rankings

Colombia’s national soccer team moved up eight places to 23rd in the latest Fifa world soccer rankings.

The team lead by Jose Pekerman were ahead of South American rivals Paraguay (25), Peru (34) and Ecuador (37), with whom they have been in direct competition for qualification for the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

Meanwhile, Uruguay cemented their position as the highest ranking team from the Americas, having leap-frogged the Netherlands (4) to reach third position. Spain remained in the top spot, followed by Germany in second.

Brazil and Argetina both dropped places, falling to fifth and tenth respectively. Chile moved up one place to 13th.

Colombia’s next fixture is the June 1 World Cup qualifier away to Peru.
