Colombia asks Interpol to arrest former peace commissioner

Colombian authorities asked Interpol on Tuesday to order international arrest warrant for the country’s fugitive former peace commissioner.

Prosecution has solicited a request in front of Interpol requesting the capture of ex-Peace Commissioner Luis Carlos Restrepo as part of the process to move forward in the false demobilization case.

According to the prosecution, the former commissioner knew about the irregularities surrounding the demobilization of the fake rebel group, indicating that he endorsed the scandal.

The fake demobilization of the fictitious FARC front “Cacica La Gaitana” in March 2006 was allegedly organized by Restrepo, along with the imprisoned FARC guerrilla “Olivo Saldaña,” and drug trafficker Hugo Rojas Yepez. The three were accused of paying homeless, unemployed people, and drug addicts to train, live and act like FARC guerrillas, and then surrender to security forces.

Restrepo is being investigated for crimes of malfeasance through action, embezzlement by appropriation, procedural fraud, and commercialization of firearms for the use of Armed Forces.

Authorities are now waiting for Interpol to decide in the next several days whether or not they accept the solicitation with the objective of capturing Restrepo, whose whereabouts have been unknown since January 8 when he fled the country for the United States.
