Colombia and Brazil to trade in own currencies

Colombia and Brazil seek to be less ‘dollardependent’ and want to
involve their own currencies the peso and the real in bilateral trade,
Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva said during a visit of
his Colombian counterpart Álvaro Uribe.

“Why don’t we do our commercial relations in our own currencies? We have to ask our finance ministers to create regulation so that we don’t depend as much on the dollar, which is becoming scarcer and more doomed every time,” Lula told the press Tuesday.

According to Lula, his country and neighbor Argentina already have a deal like this, allowing both countries to negotiate better prices on goods and services and is a way to save money, because the costs of using a third currency are skipped.

“Brazil and Colombia can construct new ways of cooperation and the financing of our industries, without being dependent on the goodwill of the rich countries to make consessions to teh poor countries,” Lula added.
