Colombia ambassador elected UN social and economic council president

Colombia’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN) on Monday was elected President of the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Nestor Osorio Londoño will lead the influential UN council responsible for economic and social work.

ECOSOC is one of the principle organs of the UN and coordinates 14 specialized agencies of the UN. It has 54 member nations.

Osorio has been on the public stage for some time, heading the International Coffee Organization from 2002 to 2010, during which period he found himself in hot water for off-color comments.
