Colombia 2010 coffee production up 10%

Colombia produced ten percent more coffee in 2010 than the year before. However, heavy rains are expected to hamper the 2011’s output.

Production grew from 7.8 million bags in 2009 to 8.9 million bags. 7.8 million of these bags were exported.

The country’s coffee federation warned that heavy rainfall in the second half of 2010 will negatively affect the 2011 crop, by reducing flowering and increasing roya fungus in trees.

Federation director Luis Genaro Muñoz Ortega called on coffee growers to plant fungus-resistant plants in the right density to “recover the normal production levels in Colombia.”
