Coal trains restart after deadly collision

Railways used by major coal companies in northern Colombia restarted Tuesday, following an accident two days earlier that killed four people.

A statement from Fenoco, a private company that operates railways for coal firms including Alabama-based Drummond, Glencore’s local Prodeco unit and Brazil’s Vale S.A., said it “was able to reestablish railway operations” shortly after noon local time.

Coal trains from Prodeco and Vale collided Sunday night at the Guamachito station in the state of Magdalena, killing the two drivers in each train and causing several coal cars to spill over.

Rail operations were immediately halted after the accident and were not able to be restarted until the cleanup was complete and until environmental authorities gave Fenoco the go-ahead.
