Chilean copper company to explore in Colombia: Minister

Chile’s National Copper Corporation, Codelco, is coming to Colombia willing to invest, announced the Energy and Mining Minister Tuesday.

Mauricio Cardenas Santamaria, who’s attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, said on his Twitter page, “First date in Davos: Diego Hernandez, president of Codelco (Chile). He is interested in exploring copper.”

Soon after he tweeted again, stating, “Codelco is the leading producer of copper in the world. It is interested in exploring in Colombia.”

Codelco is owned by the Chilean states and has 20% of the world’s copper reserves. The company has active assets of $20.3 billion.

During the forum, taking place from January 25 through 29, Cardenas will take part in a panel discussion entitled “Latin America: The transformation in a new global context,” alongside the Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli.

The minister will participate in the Responsible Mineral Development Initiative, where key mining experts and players will suggest ways to improve the development potential of mining.
