Gaviria denies aspiring presidency

Former president and current leader of the Liberal Party César Gaviria
does not aspire a second term as President of Colombia, he said
Wednesday.

“Gentlemen, I would like to make clear that I am not a candidate for anything,” Gaviria told members of his political party, newspaper El Espectador reported.

The party was showing signs of a rift last week, when supporters of Gaviria and the party other former President Ernesto Samper started a mud fight about who would be the best to lead the party to the 2010 presidential elections.

Despite his announcement, many within the party still see Gaviria as the candidate with most potential to beat current President Álvaro Uribe if he decides to run for a third term.
