Central Bank estimates 2009 inflation at 4.5%

Colombian inflation will be around 4.5 percent in 2009, while the
economy will grow around 3 percent next year, central bank chief Jose
Dario Uribe said on Friday.

“We are very confident that in the coming year (inflation) will run at
about 4.5 percent (in 2009) and this year at 7.5 percent,” Uribe told
Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of a central banking
conference, adding “That’s a big reduction, based on an important moderation in growth of
demand, an important correction in inflation expectations and lower
global prices for food and fuels.”

He said slower demand growth would also be reflected in gross domestic product growth next year.

“For 2008 we are expecting (growth of) about 3.5 percent and in 2009 it
could be slightly less, close to a half (percentage) point less …
close to 3 percent,” Uribe said. (Reuters)
