Carter Center suspends Colombia-Ecuador mediation

“It has become abundantly clear that (Ecuadorean) President Correa has no interest, at least for now, to move forward in restoring diplomatic relations with the Colombian government,” Fransisco Diez, the center’s delegate to the Americas told Ecuadorean radio station Radio Sonorama. The center decided to discontinue the five-month long mediation, because it “isn’t given the conditions” for its mediation efforts to take effect, Diez said. The center announced early June it had been able to restore the will of both Ecuador and Colombia to re-establish diplomatic ties. After “offensive” comments by Correa, Colombia unilaterally decided to postpone talks with its southern neighbor. In reaction, Ecuador refused to re-establish ties “as long as Álvaro Uribe is president of Colombia”.
