Cartagena’s 50th International Film Festival begins on Thursday, with the start of celebrations for the nine day event to showcase the best in Latin American and international cinema.
Ceremonies will commence with the open-air showing of “The Bedside Man (Cartagena)” in the city’s historic Plaza de la Aduana, which will be attended by the film’s French director Alain Monne and Colombian-born lead actress Margarita Rosa de Francisco.
Following this will be over a week of premiere film screenings, talks by producers, and awards ceremonies – the most recognized being the competition category for Ibero-American cinema, which will feature fourteen films from across Latin America and Spain.
Included in the category will be two Colombian films, “The Crab Trap” by Oscar Ruiz Navia – a recent winner at the Berlin Film Festival – and “Portraits in a Sea of Lies” by Carlos Gaviria.
The festival’s co-ordinator Lina Rodriguez says that “This year’s festival will be more compact, smaller but better quality.”
The majority of the events and screenings will take place in Cartagena’s historic center at the Teatro Heredia Adolfo Mejia and the Caribbean Plaza shopping center, located next to the Cerro de La Popa.
The festival will run from February 25 until March 5.
