Cane cutters and employer reach deal

Cane cutters of the Central Tumaco sugar company have reached an
agreement with their employers after mediation by Colombia’s minister
of Social Welfare Diego Palacio and the Bishop of Palmira.

The cane cutter had been on strike for 48 days, demaning better working conditions and fairer payments. The made deal includes and adjustment in the payment of the cutters.

According to Caracol Radio there is progress in the talks between cutters and other companies. The strike had not yet been lifted there.

The directors of the Maria Luisa sugar company are still not talking to the cutters and have suspended 300 strikers until they go back to work again.
