Canada to put conditions on FTA with Colombia

by Katharina Wecker May 12, 2009

Colombia news - Canada

Canada Congressmen are demanding a series of conditions to approve a
Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Colombia, local media reported Monday.

Colombia would have to meet eight new requirements to achieve the FTA, such as to review the number of people displaced by violence and to comply with labor laws, Colombian senator Alexandra Morteno Piraquive said.

The government of President Alvaro Uribe should show a more friendly and constructive relationship with human rights groups in the country.

Furthermore, Colombia would have to create an independent body to evaluate the impact on the environment and to create a higher standard of protection.

The approval of the FTA with Colombia will be discussed this Tuesday in the Canadian Parliament.
