Large parts of Cali under water after extreme rainfall

Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in the south and east of Colombia’s third largest city Cali and has disconnected the city from towns south of the city.

According to local authorities, the rivers Cauca, Melendez, Cañaveralejo and Lili have overflown and have reportedly flooded some 50 neighborhoods.

The main road to Yamundi was shut down after the flooding of the Lili river blocked the bridge southward. Residents are trying to clean the road to make access to the city possible again.

According to the Red Cross, two people were trapped in their home after their house was buried under a landslide.

Local newspaper El Pais reported authorities have declared an orange alert over the floods.

Extreme rainfall due to this year’s first rainy season has disrupted public life in several parts of Colombia where authorities are on red alert amid fears of more floods and landslides.
