Over 700 salsa dancers from all over the world will flood Colombia’s salsa capital of Cali later this week to compete for the title of world salsa champion in the World Salsa Festival.
Judges will evaluate dancers on choreography, stage presence, partner chemistry and creativity in the fifth annual event, which kicks off Saturday September 11.
Dancers from countries such as the U.S., Venezuela and the U.K. will participate in elimination rounds in the categories of adult, young adult, children and for the first time “ensamble,” or performances to live music. Elimination rounds will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Cristales theater, the Plaza de Toros, and the Municipal theater.
From the elimination rounds, 20 couples, 20 young adult groups and seven children’s groups will be selected to compete in the Grand Final.
The fifth annual festival will celebrae “50 years of salsa” and will close with a special ceremony hosted by special guest and Puerto Rican salsa legend Willie Rosario aka Mr Afinque.
Over the last 50 years, Cali has built a reputation as one of the salsa capitals of the world. All performances are free.
