Cali pays tribute to Helenita Vargas

Cali holds a six-hour tribute to Colombian icon Helenita Vargas, who passed away Monday.

The homage to the late singer was held in the Municipal Theatre of Cali at 2PM, Tuesday, according to Caracol Radio. Carlos Rojas, the city’s culture and tourism secretary, said that the tribute involved eulogies from different entities including the Council of Cali and the government of Cali.

President Juan Manuel Santos issued a statement lamenting the death of the iconic figure.

Vargas, also known as “La Ronca de Oro” (The lady with the golden husky voice), died Monday 7 February in the Clinica de la Fundacion del Valle de Lili in Cali.

Vargas will be buried Wednesday, February 9 in the southern Colombian city.
