Colombia’s “Divine City,” Cali, moves away from its reputation as the capital of salsa and offers cultural events, gastronomy, trips to the countryside and classical music during Holy Week.
“Cali: Divine City” is a new project during Holy Week aimed at showing more unknown sides of Colombia’s third largest city. The idea of the project is, “Colombians can enjoy Cali not only for the salsa and the delicious food but for all the tourist destinations [Cali] has in order to have a good Holy Week,” a project representative said.
Cali’s Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most renowned in Latin America, has a special Holy Week presentation on March 28 and 29, in the Municipal Theatre Enrique Buenaventura. Works performed include Wagner’s “Overture Rienzi,” Vivaldi’s “Domine Deus” and Bach’s “Air Orchestral Suite No 3.” These presentations will see the presence of the Costa Rican soloist Jacques Sagot and the Colombian soprano Beatriz Mora, directed by American conductor Irwin Hoffman. The music starts at 5PM both days. The location of the theatre is Cra 5a. # 6 – 64, Cali.
Also on Thursday, the “Divine Market” will offer gastronomy and artisanal works in the center of Cali. The market is located at Calle 3 Oeste No 3-20, Barrio El Peñon. The market is open from 11AM to 8PM.

On Saturday, tourist guides will take people out of the city and out into the countryside, where some of the most famous country houses in the Valle del Cauca department will be visited. More information on the Ciudad Divina homepage. Later during Saturday, poetry readings are scheduled from 6PM to 8PM at the Auditorio Diego Garces Giraldo, located in the Departamental Library. The library is located at Calle 5 No 24A – 91, Barrio 3 de Julio, Cali.
