Cali derby ends undecided while Once Caldas impress

by Jonathan Roorda March 22, 2010

Colombia news - Cali America

Sunday’s derby of Cali between Deportivo and America ended in a 1-1 draw, while Once Caldas left a great impression in a 5-1 win over Pereira.

Deportivo Cali and arch rivals America were both desperate for points in their local derby, but neither got exactly what they wanted.

America were on their way to a possible victory after Edwin Aguilar put them ahead in the 43rd minute, but Deportivo’s Luis Muriel levelled seven minutes after the break, 1-1.

Envigado were held to a 2-2 draw at Cucuta, despite the hosts being a man down in the last part of the second half. Dorlan Pabon put Envigado in the lead on 26 minutes but Diego Cabrera equalised on the hour from the penalty spot.

Cucuta’s Carlos Baez was send off in the 62nd minute but it initially did not seem to affect his team as Cabrera netted his second two minutes later. Envigado would limit the damage though as Pabon also got his second in the 72nd minute.

Once Caldas cruised past Pereira in Manizalez with Dayro Moreno scoring the opener in the very first minute. Dany Santoya doubled the advantage ten minutes later and Fernando Uribe made it 3-0 in the 16th.

With six minutes left before the break, Jose Velez set the score to 4-0. Julian Barahona got one back for Pereira in the 55th minute but Diego Amaya had the final say 20 minutes later, 5-1.

In other matches on Sunday, Boyaca Chico beat La Equidad 5-0 and Cortulua earned a 1-2 win at Quindio.

Based on the current standings, Real Cartagena, Junior, Medellin and Santa Fe are on course to qualify for the semi finals. Fifth-placed Tolima do have a game in hand.
