Northern Colombia bullfight festival results in 1 death, multiple wounded

A “corraleja” festival resulted in one alleged death and several people hospitalized near the Colombian Carribbean coast.

The corraleja festival in the town of Sabanalarga in the northern Atlantico department that lasted from Thursday to Monday resulted in one death and an alleged 30 wounded going to the hospital,

The festival involves contestants facing off in the bullring and fighting bulls to the death, and seems to have also included a copious amount of alcohol, a possible factor in the number of wounded from the festival, according to newspaper El Heraldo.

Although many people have already been discharged from the hospital for minor wounds, there were 10 injured who are reportedly “still hospitalized because they received more serious wounds” from bull attacks.

El Heraldo claimed that one of the seriously injured men, 23-year-old Rafael Estrada, died in the hospital from severe neck wounds and head trauma. According to attendees of the festival, Estrada had been trampled on several occasions during the festival which ultimately lead to his death.

Several children were also treated for injuries, some of which were allegedly intoxicated.

Not all of the corraleja injuries treated at the hospital were sustained from bullfighting, but were allegedly also the result of broken bottles and stones being thrown during the party.
