Bolivian President Evo Morales said Colombia does not deserve a spot on the U.N. Security Council, as the South American nation is acting in the interests of the United States, reports El Tiempo.
Colombia is seeking to succeed Mexico in representing Latin America and the Caribbean on the U.N. Security Council, a term which would begin January 1, 2011. Colombia has been a non-permanent member on the council six times since its creation, the most recent being from 2001-2002. Terms last for two years and are voted on by the U.N. General Assembly.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos defended the country’s aspirations, saying Colombia has more than 70 countries which support its candidacy for the council.
