Bolivarian party to collect signatures for 2010 elections

The Colombian National Register has authorized the collection of
signatures for the possible inscription of the  (M.S.B.) for the presidential elections in 2010.

In an interview with El Espectador, party coordinator David Corredor Cuéllar explained that his organization aims to protect politics that represent “everything that is Bolivarian”.

One of the main issues the ‘Chavista’ movement proposes is the complete nationalizing of petroleum, as is currently the case in neighboring Venezuela, where president Hugo Chávez funds numerous social projects with the cashflow generated by the country’s oil.

“We are very much aware of the Venezuelan reality and we believe in the democratic model used in Venezuela,” Cuéllar said.

Based on the 2006 elections, for which 11.4 million Colombians cast their votes, the movement requires more than 356 thousand signatures (3 percent) to launch an official candidature, according to the National Register.
