“These are fights between friends, neighbors and relatives. They are people who have been happily sharing either public spaces or private places and due to their advanced state of drunkenness are drawn into fights, causing injury or even death,” police commander Rodolfo Palomino told Caracol Radio.
Victims of the weekend’s violence included police officer Jair Ernesto Valenzuela, who was shot when trying to break up a fight near his house in the Corinto de Suba neighborhood, according to Caracol Radio.
Bogotá’s street fighting problem became apparent at the beginning of this year, when in just six hours police responded to 2,268 street fights, Palomino added.
