Bogota airport authorities seize $11 million in fake bills

by Adriaan Alsema April 22, 2010

Colombia news - false dollars

Bogota airport authorities seized $11 million in fake U.S. bills on Thursday that were destined for Miami, Florida.

The counterfeit $100 bills were hidden inside of a photo album that, according to authorities, was suspiciously large.

Initially, the authorities at the El Dorado airport thought that the over-sized photo album contained drugs, but after being inspected by dogs, that possibility was discarded.

After discovering that the address where the album was supposed to be going to didn’t exist, authorities confiscated and opened the album, finding the stacks of counterfeit dollars.

According to the U.S. embassy in Bogota, the counterfeit bills were of “excellent” quality.

No arrests were made, but police in the southern Colombian city of Cali were notified, because the album was sent from there.
