Blind woman receives Fulbright Scholarship

Adriana Pulido, 30, is the first blind Colombian to be granted a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the United States.

Pulido will study for two years in a master’s program in communication and journalism at an American university. Adriana Pulido and Eliana Pilar, another fellow, are the first disabled Colombians to receive a Fulbright Scholarship.

Pulido said that her time at school was not always easy. “The kids were cruel and would constantly remind me that I am blind,” she told El Espectador. Pulido always attended mainstream educational institutions and is therefore very independent.

The young woman was born at 24 weeks and the excess oxygen in the incubator left her blind. Pulido said she strives to lead a normal life, despite her disability.
