Betancourt meets Spanish king; announces human rights foundation

In Ingrid Betancourt news of the day, the former FARC hostage announced she will create a foundation in favor of human rights and met with the king of Spain.

“We are working on a foundation, whose objective is to provide tools that work in a crisis situation, work for freedom, in defense of human rights and work for a different world,” Betancourt, who was liberated in June with 14 other hostages, told French press agency AFP.

“I want to find the best people” to work in the foundation, “a team of people who are disposed to fight with you, reflect with you,” added Betancourt, who is currently in Madrid promoting ‘Green Hell,’ a book written by fellow captive Luis Eladio Pérez with journalist Darío Arizmendi.

Betancourt was also received by his majesty Juan Carlos I, king of Spain, at the Zarzuela Palace, reported Spanish press agency EFE. The king joins the Pope and Colombian president Álvaro Uribe as top public notables who have met with the ex-hostage.
