Best Colombian news website: El Espectador

by Adriaan Alsema October 3, 2008

Newspaper El Espectador won a prize for having the best Colombian news website. The website, launched in its current form in March 2008, has grown to reach 120,000 people every day.

The reason for it’s success and the following recognition of the Colombian Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunication is because of its implementation of web 2.0, the navigation, the design and teh informative quality, the jury ruled.

Adding to that, says El Espectador editor-in-chief Leonardo Rodríguez, is that the news is brought as it happens.

“We have an online staff of 17 people, most of whom are on the street. Whenever news happens, we are able to publish it immediately,” he told Colombia Reports.

Rodríguez also says a smooth collaboration between print and online division and a deal made with sister company Caracol Radio contributes to as-it-happens publish possibility.

El Espectador is now Colombia’s second most read online news website, but Rodríguez hopes to overtake the country’s number one El Tiempo soon.
