Barranquilla man sentenced to 23 years for tourist murder

A Barranquilla man has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for the murder of a Spanish female tourist visiting the north Colombian city for its annual carnival in March.

The 20-year old Brayan Dario Blanco Escorcia confessed to the murder enabling him to be given a 50% reduction of the initial sentence.

The assassin stressed the murder was not a contract kill, but an attempted robbery.

“Don’t condemn me as contract killer. What I did was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The shot just happened. I accept my mistake,” Blanco Escorcia told the judge according to local newspaper El Heraldo Monday.

Following the murder on March 2, the victim’s family claimed that the two men involved in the murderer had been hired by the Colombian husband of the 30-year old Spaniard.

The attorney of the victim’s family said his clients would not appeal the sentence.

Blanco Escorcia’s alleged fellow-robber will have to appear before the court on Thursday.
