Barranquilla carnival opens before 800,000 spectators (photos)

The Barranquilla carnival, one of Colombia’s most important cultural events, opened on Saturday, and more than 800,000 people flocked to see the lavishly decorated cars, dancers, and beauty queens.

Some 200 folkloric groups, 300 costume-wearing dancers and clowns, and pretty much every beauty queen in the entire country passed massive crowds that endured the full-on tropical sun and 95 degree temperatures.

According to local newspaper El Heraldo, there were no unexpected incidents.
