Baguette triggers bomb alert

by Katharina Wecker July 21, 2009

Colombia news - Baguette bomb

A baguette wrapped in a bag lying in front of a ATM caused a bomb alert
in Sincelejo, northwest Colombia, and paralyzed the city for three
hours on Monday morning.

A citizen warned the police about a suspicious package and after the first investigation with several dogs the police decided to evacuate people living in the area, El Heraldo reported Tuesday.

The police requested assistance from explosive specialists of the Marines who immediately came with their equipment for controlled detonation.

At 10:30AM a bomb expert prepared to detonate the “explosive” when he discovered that not a bomb was threatening Sincelejo but a baguette. The police believes that probably a customers forgot the bread when using the ATM.
