Avalanche devastates southern Cordoba

An avalanche devastated the town of San Juan in the Caribbean department of Cordoba early Thursday morning.

Local media reported between four and nine people are missing and 20 to 30 are injured.

The avalanche was caused by a landslide as the result of recent heavy rains. The landslide blocked a local dam, causing water pressure to build until it finally burst forth in an avalanche of earth and water.

Authorities estimate that more than 60% of the surrounding area and at least 100 homes were destroyed. Large numbers of local crops were also destroyed.

Those hurt are being transported to local Puerto Libertador and Montelíbano hospitals.

The Red Cross, an emergency squad and the police are in the area to assist those affected
