Authorities try restoring order in Colombian prisons

Colombia’s prison authority and the National Police started a large
scale operation Thursday to put an end to the criminal activities of
inmates.

Responsible Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio said the involved authorities had begun inspections in five of the country’s prisons and are transferring inmates to stop them from committing crimes from inside their cells.

According to the minister, several inmates are leading organizations that extort civilians and entrepreneurs in ‘the outside world’.

The minister also claims to have proof of some prison guards collaborating with the criminals in their illegal activities.
