Authorities nab prominent FARC commander

Cali authorities say they arrested the second commander of the FARC’s 48th Front, active in the highly volatile south of Colombia.

The alleged guerrilla-leader, Delio ‘Juanca’ Tobón Ortiz is said to have controlled guerrilla groups in the Putumayo department. His arrest followed “three months of investigation and persecution,” a police spokesman told Canal Caracol.

‘Juanca’ is said to be the right-hand man of Edgar Tovar, the top commander of the guerrillas’ 48th front.

The suspected guerrilla is accused of taking part in the planning and execution of a 2005 attack on a military base in the south of Colombia that killed 21 soldiers.

‘Juanca’ will be tried on terrorism, rebellion and aggravated homicide charges.
