Authorities issued a code yellow alert for Volcano El Machin in southern Colombian after the National Observatory of Vulcanology and Seismology registered 54 seismic movements over the weekend.

The volcano, located in the department of Tolima, registered a reading of 1.3 on the Richter scale, Semana reported Monday. This was the volcano’s highest reading for 2009, following a period of high activity in 2008.

The Tolima Regional Emergency Committee continues to monitor the volcano and maintains a communications system with Colombia’s National Disaster and Emergency Center.

The emergency committee is also conducting evacuation training with local communities as a precaution. The area has not been evacuated.
