Authorities deal ‘heavy blow’ to Urabeños gang

by Adriaan Alsema September 28, 2010

Colombia news - Urabeños

Authorities in the north-western Colombian department of Antioquia on Monday arrested ten suspected members of neo-paramilitary drug gang “Los Urabeños.”

Among the arrestants is alias “El Flaco,” alleged ringleader of the group.

The operation leading to the arrest was carried out by the army and police near Yarumal, a town in northern Antioquia.

The security forces seized eight assault rifles, ammunition, four military uniforms, and bulletproof vests, and called the operation a “heavy blow” to the criminal organization.

“Los Urabeños” was formed by members of the AUC who did not take part in the demobilization of the paramilitary group. Until his arrest in April 2009 it was led by “Don Mario,” one of Colombia’s three most wanted men at the time.
