Justice and Peace Unit gets new head

Colombia’s prosecutor general names attorney Elba Beatriz Silva Vargas as the new director of the Justice and Peace Unit, the government body which administers the demobilization of paramilitaries, Colombian media reported Monday.

Following the decision of Prosecutor General Viviane Morales Hoyos, Silva Vargas will replace Luis Gonzalez as the new director of the National Unit of Prosecutors for Justice and Peace.

Silva Vargas has spent more than 20 years working for the Office of the Prosecutor General, and is known for her work in the investigation and demobilization of paramilitary troops from the Centauros Bloc and the Heroes de los Llanos Front.

During her time in office, the attorney was in charge of documenting numerous massacres and crimes committed by paramilitary forces.

The new director is also the former coordinator of the National Unit for Human Rights and for International Humanitarian Rights.
