Asia offers ‘great potential’ for Colombia

Colombia sees “great potential” in Asia when it comes to export and attracting tourists and investment, the director of Colombia’s investment and tourism promotion agency said.

In an interview with Spanish press agency EFE, Proexport director Maria Claudia Lacouture said that in Asia she sees “a great potential to generate investment in Colombia,” to “generate tourists” and to “export Colombian products to those countries.”

Focusing more on Asia is a “government policy,” said Lacouture.

Following the financial crisis in the United States and a diplomatic crisis with Venezuela — both countries are Colombia’s main trade partners — the Andean nation made diversification of trade a priority to avoid dependence of the vulnerable U.S. economy and diplomatic relations with Colombia’s neighbor. “Without forgetting” that Colombia’s “main markets are Europe and Latin America,” Colombia is now “looking at Asia.”
