Ashes of soccer legend Miguel Calero arrive in Colombia

Half of the ashes of the deceased Colombian soccer legend Miguel Calero were brought back to his home country from Mexico City Tuesday.

Calero’s wife and children began the trip back to Colombia Monday night with the intention of eventually laying the former Colombian goalkeeper to rest in his home town of Ginebra, western Colombia.

“There was no possibility that the ashes were elsewhere. [Calero] grew up in Ginebra and will rest there forever,” said Carlos Calero, cousin to the soccer star who died at the age of 41 in late 2012 as an eventual result of a stroke.

A ceremony will be held on January 17 in Ginebra to pay honor to Calero.

Carlos Calero went on to note that “we are not asking for anything, the affection of the people has been more than enough to show gratitude to Miguel.”
