Army to promote soldiers kidnapped by the FARC

Colombia’s Armed Forces will promote four soldiers who have been in captivity of the FARC for 10 years now.

The four officials, William Donato Gomez, Enrique Murillo Sanchez, Elkin Hernadez Rivas and Edgar Yesid Duarte Valero, were kidnapped by the guerrillas in 1998.

The officials will be honored with a promotion during a military ceremony and be promoted to the rank of colonel, El Espectador reported Wednesday.

Lieutenant William Donato Gomez served as a commander in the Base of Miraflore, Guaviare department (Central Western Colombia) when he was abducted in the middle of a fight on 3 August, 1998.

Enrique Murillo Sanchez, Police Captain, fought 72 hours against some 1000 FARC guerrillas before he was kidnapped along with 60 other soldiers on 1 November, 1998.

Police Captain Edgar Yesid Duarte Valero and Police Seargeant Elkin Hernadez Rivas were captured by the FARC on14 October 1998 while traveling to Paujil, Caqueta department (Central South of Colombia).
