Army rescues kidnapped mayoral candidate

The Colomban army said Saturday it has rescued a mayoral candidate who was allegedly kidnapped by rebels of the FARC in June.

Partido de la U canaidate Eduard Castellanos Betancourt was kidnapped on June 19 while campaigning in the rural area around San Juan de Arama, a town in the central Meta department.

Local media did not give details about the liberation, but said the man was probably held by the FARC’s 42nd front, which is highly active in the area.

So far this year, at least three local politicians were murdered by alleged FARC guerrillas while on campaign.
