Colombian authorities say they have arrested a member of the FARC in charge of the security of the guerrillas’ supreme leader, “Alfonso Cano.”
According to a press release by the army, “Araceli” was arrested in the village of Paez in the southwestern Cauca department.
Two guerrillas who accompanied the suspect were killed. The alleged guerrilla leader herself was injured and taken to a hospital in the city of Neiva.
“Araceli” is accused of leading the FARC’s 66th front, in charge of one of “Alfonso Cano’s” security rings and being responsible for kidnappings, murders and attacks on state forces.
The Colombian army is carrying out several offensives in the mountainous area on the border of the Tolima and Cauca departments trying to locate the FARC’s number one.
Last week, the army claimed to have killed twelve guerrillas in the south of Tolima. These guerrillas also allegedly were part of Cano’s personal security network.
