Army announces change in war strategy

Army Commander Alejandro Navas said that in view of recent attacks by the FARC in the Cauca region, the army is changing its strategy, newspaper El Espectador reported Thursday.

The armed forces, according to Navas, have already increased operations in the Cauca department, in southwest Colombia, and specifically in the municipalities of Caloto and Caldono, where fatal attacks have occurred in the last week.

“The Public force is changing its form of operating in accordance with the nature of the conflict in that territory. The FARC are committing crimes in small groups, therefore the Public Force has adapted in a number of ways in order to combat them,” said Navas, according to the article.

The Commander said that the armed forces are not only strengthening intelligence operations in the countrysides, but also the coordination of all the Colombian armed forces.

Navas said that this offensive against the FARC and criminal bands will integrate the National Police, the Pacific Joint command, the National Navy and the Air Force, in a strategy called the “War Plan of the Military Forces” in order to end the attacks by guerrilla forces.
