Obama has moral responsibility to back FTA: Colombia

U.S. President Barack Obama has a “moral responsibility” to push Congress to ratify the pending free trade agreement with Colombia, Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon said Friday.

Garzon, on an official visit to Spain, announced at a convention that he will travel to Washington in November to lobby U.S. Congress to ratify the 2006 pact.

“I will be in Washington in the third week of November. I will be talking to the several sectors of American society, also with the Democrats and the Republican Party, with businessmen and with unions,” Garzon said.

Meanwhile, Obama “has the moral responsibility to push the approval of the FTA,” the Colombian VP said.

The four-year old free trade pact has not yet been signed by U.S. Congress because of the Democratic majority’s objections to Colombia’s labor rights record.
